“Who is a good teacher and who is not?”
If you are a teacher, how you could
be a good teacher since everyone has different on his/her own perspective what
a good teacher is. Also, how you would
not be a bad teacher that everyone hate.
These easy simple questions do not give you easy simple answers. There
is no exactly line to point out what a good teacher is or what is a bad teacher. It could depend in different situations between
teacher and student. However, many evidences of great teachers throughout our lives have shown us it is not hard to be a good teacher and many evidences show us how a bad teacher is. In movies Freedom
Writers, Ms. Gruwell is a great teacher because she is dedicated and cares
for her students. On the other hand, in
articles “School”, Sister Mary of Perpetual Help is not a good teacher because
she is lack of connects and emotion abuse with her students.
Ms. Gruwell is a great teacher
because she is dedicated teacher. She has tried
very hard to find the right solutions to improve her students’ knowledge. When the principle is not let her to use the
school books, she decides to work more two part time jobs—to be able to buy
books for her students. She has put many
thought what is good for her students.
She buys books that related to students’ lives and the books have opened
and inspired students’ mind.
Furthermore, Ms. Gruwell takes students on a field trip to the Museum of
Tolerance, and then she takes students to have dinner with some Holocaust
survivors. This trip and dinner have
become significant experiences for her students. They had not been treated with respect and a
proper manner before; Ms. Gruwell treats her students with respect and kindness
heart. After dinner, one student decides
to throw away his gun, because he cannot forget how violence affect and cause
the young Holocaust victim’s life that he sees in museum. Most students realize their situations are
less worse than Jews people in holocaust.
The boundary of violence and fighting they had before has gone by
experience of a field trip and dinner that Ms. Gruwell makes for them. Ms. Gruwell dedicated works change her
students behavior to be in a better way. They
become to connect each another in class, obsessive in reading, and make sense
about their lives. Ms. Gruwell is not
just improving their knowledge but she has improved the better life for her
students, too.
Ms. Gruwell is also a great teacher
because she is cared about her students.
While the principle and the other colleagues give up about students’
room 203, Ms. Gruwell has the different point of view. She believes students’ ability and wants them
to have the right education rather than just keep them busy at school. Ms. Gruwell is care very much with her
students. They become as a family. When one student asks Ms. Gruwell to stay
with her after school to work on the homework and wait for her aunt, Ms.
Gruwell say yes with fully happiness and warm feeling. Ms. Gruwell knows how much her students need
her for the following year. She goes to
fight the authority to be with her students and helps them to graduate a high
school. Ms. Gruwell makes a point what
the other teacher could not teach her class because they are not like
students. This point is so true. If teacher does not care or like his/her
class, how much improvement in the class would be? One student read the journal through the
class in the party how rough in his life, and then how much Ms. Gruwell class
has changed his life. Ms. Gruwell shows
how a great teacher she is. She is not
just knowledgeable as same as the other teacher but she is being more than
ordinary teacher. The dedicated and care
of her students make her to be such a great teacher.
Sister Marry of Perpetual Help is a
bad teacher because she is lack of connection with her class. She does not understand individual student
need. She makes student feel either she
does not like to teacher or students.
She is not notice about Lorde’s reading number problem. She prejudice Lorde would be able to do
homework on her own, and blame Lorde is a bad student to lie to her. Sister Marry of Perpertual Help is not tried
to understand her student. Furthermore,
she judges her student from her own braise.
This situation becomes the terrified learning experience to Lorde. Lorde could not understand what she was doing
wrong and why she got punished. When
teacher does not pay enough attention and judges from their own braise, she/he
would not be able to understand student.
The learning improvement would be able to grow if teacher and students
loss their connection as what Sister Marry of Perpetual Help does with Lorde.
Sister Marry of Perpetual Help is
not a good teacher because she was emotion abuse to her students. Emotion abuse is very sensitive topic nowadays
but no one pays much attention during that time yet. However, everyone would
expect to see teacher give education in mature manner and kindness heart. Sister Marry of Perpetual Help does not have
the right manner to be a good teacher. Sister
Marry of Perpetual Help has divided up the class in two colors groups; the
Fairies and the Brownies. It is racism
and this evidence show Sister Marry of Perpetual Help does not use an appropriate
manner as a teacher. Moreover, Sister
Marry of Perpetual Help is emotion abuse Lorde by has the rest of students in
the class offer up a special prayer for Lorde to stop be a wicked-hearted
child, because Lorde breaks her glasses by accident. Lord does not mean to break her glass when
Sister Marry of Perpetual Help asks the rest of the class to pray for her as a
bad girl is not the right thing to do.
There is no good cause for Sister Marry of Perpetual Help to do it
rather than abuse Lorde. This situation
has caused Lord for stress and affects her learning in the young age. Every teacher should have the right manner to
teach. Sister Marry of Perpetual Help is
not just a bad teacher; she is not even ready to be a teacher from what she has
done with Lorde.
