blog post #22 4/28 Is Ms. Erin Gruwell a good teacher....

Significant samples from movie.

Ms. Gruwell is a good teacher because she tries her best to understand individual of her students and think critical to find the way to help them. For example, the scene that Ms. Gruwell asks the principle to let students to read Ann Frank's book because she think this book will connect to students' lives.  She believes students will be able to read and may open their minds. However, the principle does not think the same thing.  The principle thinks students will destroy books and book cannot change them. Furthermore, Ms. Gruwell asks the other teacher to help her to convince the principle.  The other teacher shows his racism attitude with students and would not help Ms. Gruwell to talk to the principle. This scene shows clearly why Mr. Gruwell is a good teacher. She believes and sees the potential of great deal in her students while the other teachers already give up on them. She even gos further by trying to find the way to get the book for students. She find the book that is related with students' backgrounds which is made students love to read it. She makes a game in classroom that is made students know how much they have thing in common even though they hate each another.  The Journals, that she gives, are encourage students to write and to relief their plains. She tries to understand students' background through their journals.

Blog post #19 4/23 how does Lorde illustrate what the teachers she encountered were like.

How does Lorde illustrate what the teachers she encountered were like?

Lorde illustrates Sister Marry of Perpetual Help's unpleasant character by reporting that "she was supposed to be totally dedicated, like all the other Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, to caring for the Colored and Indian children of america. Caring for was not always caring about. And it always felt like Sister MPH hated either teaching or little children." (p.27)
Furthermore, Lorde then refer how Sister Marry of Perpetual Help is a non reflective teacher by "She had the rest of the class offer up a prayer for my poor mother who had such a naughty girl who broke her glasses and caused her parents such needless extra expense to replace them. She also had tehm offer up a special prayer for me to stop being such a wicked-hearted child." (p.30)

extra blog post#3 Ted Talk

I don't think school has killed the creativity but it doesn't encourage to some children.  The education structure that we have now may not fit in every child but it still apply to some children.  However, I like when he points out about diverse talents.  His example about Ms. Gillian is very clear about the divers talents and we need to encourage our children nowadays.  His points about the low estimate value of art and music major are very good points.  I have seen so many parents still cannot over come and accept the idea the equal value to art and music.  I think many people are trying to be more open mind about it.  However, when the time is came to choose, many parents are rather choice to give more value to math, language than art and music.  It will take a long time to change the attitude of parent about structure of education.  I still do not think the education system that we have now is bad.  It just need to adjust few more thing to be improvement and impact more wisely to every child.

extra blog post #2 What is the main point of the narrative you just wrote?

What is the main point of the narrative you just wrote? ( kinda like the "I'm just saying '>>" idea"

My main point on the narrative essay is a little step to cook Thai food have changed my life.  I found my passionate and enjoyment that I did not think I would be able to do.  I love to eat Thai food but I used to think it was too hard for me to cook.  I have heard the same feeling from many friends and family.

blog post #17 First essay: "Thai food is very easy to cook?"

"Thai food is very hard to cook!" Many people and even Thais say this to me.  You might expect that Thais should know how to cook Thai food, though many Thais do not know or are even scared to cook Thai food.  In Thailand, it is not expensive to eat out - especially street food.  Many Thais prefer to buy street food rather than cooking food for themselves.  As the youngest daughter, I had my mother and many siblings to cook for me.  Homesick and suffering from culture shock after moving to the USA forced me to learn how to cook Thai food.  After I explored and cooked for a while, I started to get numerous compliments.  I would like to say to everyone that if I can cook Thai food, you can too!
When I was a kid, I made many mistakes in the kitchen while I helped my mom or my siblings to cook.  I made so many mistakes that I became scared to cook.  For instance, my sister asked me to marinate short pork rib for deep frying.  I was supposed to marinate with brown sugar, ground white pepper, oyster sauce, and minced garlic.  She told me to guess the measurement of the ingredients by taste – no measurements!  Deep fried short rib should be a little sweet because it is served with a spicy sour sauce on the side.  I love the richness of flavorful food.  So to make sure that my ribs were very flavorful, I put three times the amount of spices in that my sister recommended.  The ribs came out terrible!  Not even deep frying them could make them taste good.  Nobody could eat it, not even myself.

After that, I told myself I should just wait outside the kitchen and enjoy eating the food when it was done.  When I moved to the USA, I could not bring my family with me.  Luckily, I got a job at a Thai restaurant.  I started to copy and ask some techniques from the chef.  I started with the basic meals like stir fried mixed vegetables.  When my first Thai food came out not only edible but actually tasting good, I was so proud of myself.  When I gained more confidence and experience, I cooked for my family and friends.  Whenever I feel stressful, cooking Thai food makes me relax.  Who would not enjoy and be happy to eat such lovely food with a great aroma and flavorful textures taste in their mouth?
Thai food is not as difficult to cook as many people think; especially, the favorite menus that everyone likes.  Thai curry has so many varieties of curry: green curry, panang curry, red curry, and so on.  The main basic ingredients in every curry are curry paste, coconut milk, sugar, fish sauce, vegetables, and any type of meat you prefer.  For example, panang curry and red curry are almost the same.  For panang curry I will not add more water, broth, or vegetables.  I stir red curry paste with coconut milk for just a little while.  Then I add the meat into it.  Whenever the meat gets done, I add the rest of the coconut milk.  Then I add sugar and fish sauce to the taste I like.  Many Thai restaurants have made Thai curry too sweet for the American taste which I’d rather not eat on my own Thai food.

When I see the sauce get a little bit thick, it is time to serve it with some hot steamed rice.  Furthermore, if I am in the mood for red curry, I just add water and vegetables into the sauce.  Red curry will have a thinner sauce, but it is not so soupy like a soup.  The juice from the fruits and vegetables (like pineapple, bamboo, etc.) will create its own unique taste.  I can make either panang curry or red curry by just adding water and vegetables.

Curry paste is not just for making curry sauce.  Curry paste can makes such a wonderful texture to the stir fried dishes as well.  For example, stir fried pork with green beans and red curry paste is another easy meal.  I stir fry pork with a little bit of oil and curry paste.  Then I add oyster sauce, fish sauce, sugar, and white pepper at the same time with my green beans.  I stir until the green beans are cooked but not too soft, and then I am done.  Furthermore, if I am bored to eat with white rice, I just stir the rice into the wok.  Then I just make curry fried rice.  These easy meals never bore me or my family and friends.  Thai food can be very flexible and creative.  I surprise myself and please my stomach when I try to put something new into my Thai food.   These easy Thai menus have shown me some new food experiences every day.  Easy basic Thai food always comes with the same basic ingredients that I must have in my kitchen.
I have learned that I cannot make Thai food to be delicious without basic ingredients.  Thai food cannot be Thai food without fish sauce – not even some of Thai desserts! Some Thai people say that “fish sauce is the stinkiest thing that is made into deliciousness.”  The saltiness from fish sauce gives such great taste in Thai food.  My easy favorite meal is hot steamed white rice with fish sauce.
Fish sauce is also a base for almost all side sauces for Thai meals.  For example, spicy sauce for seafood is made from chopped hot chili, garlic, and cilantro.  I mix them up with fish sauce and lime juice.  Spiciness from hot chili and the aroma texture from herbs like garlic and cilantro blend very well with the saltiness from fish sauce and the sour taste from lime juice.  This spicy sauce goes really well with any seafood.  Most Thai curries have to have coconut milk to give a creamy taste.  Most Thai stir fried meals have to have oyster sauce and soy sauce which is influenced by Chinese food.  I found out that with just these basic ingredients such as fish sauce, coconut milk, oyster sauce, and soy sauce; I can make easy tasty Thai food anytime I like.
Thai food is easier than I thought.  I had no idea how to cook any food before I began to experiment.  Now I love to be in the kitchen and enjoy exchanging knowledge about cooking with my other friends.  I started from cooking just these basic Thai meals.  The ease of cooking Thai food has made me fall in love with cooking.  I have found my true happiness and passion.  Now I am not scared to cook more varieties of food.  My happiness and enjoyment has grown bigger and bigger in my kitchen from my tiny easy Thai cooking step.  I hope this Thai cooking step will grow happiness to your kitchen as well.  I smell the delicious curry paste right now.  What should I cook for dinner tonight?

Topic :  Moving to Another State
Who : I and husband
Where: From Guam to California, California to Virginia, Virginia to California, California to Connecticut, Connecticut to Washington
Why: Navy relocation
When : started from 2009
How:  finding new house, new friend, new lifestyle. and new school- have seen many different places and become a good driver for all those across country driving

Since I moved from Thailand to Guam.  It took me few years to adjust myself with American life style.  I started to love my paradise Guamanian life style.  I told myself I would not move anywhere anymore and I found my place.  However, my whole life have changed when I decided to marry sweetest man in the world.  I had to say good bye to my paradise island to Monterey, California.
Few of people I know had told me how beautiful of Monterey is; yet, I was very skeptical at that time.  First few months I started to find a job.  I had a very hard time because surprisingly many people in Monterey did not know where Guam is.  They even thought it was another country and was not accept my Guam ID card as photo ID.  The work experiences I had from Guam were not counted at Monterey even though I got many recommendation letters from every bosses at my previous jobs.  I became lost confident that I would not find any job.  Luckily, my creative resume caught Pebble Beach Resort human resource eyes.  More luck of me, the manager who interviewed me had Thai wife so he got used to with my Thai-English accent.  finally I got the job there as cocktail waitress.  I started to love my job and looked forward to step up my career.  My husband had to move to Norfolk, Virginia.
Again, I had to say good bye to my good friends, jobs, favorite beauty salon, and restaurants.  We tried to set up our life at Norfolk.  It took me a while to get a new job on Navy base.  I changed my job from waitress to become child care giver.  At Navy child care, I was only Thai worker there.  It was very hard for few months to let everyone understand my accent until I got scared to teach Pre-school ages.  I hided myself with infants room and fallen in love with them all.  After I started to get along well with my co-workers and loved all babies I had to take care, my husband got the new order again.  Yes, again,
We had to move to San Diego, California.  I had been there before I like it.  We decided to buy our first house there.  We both were so excited about our first house.  My husband got his own man cave at garage and I got my lovely hobby at garden.  We were working very hard to make our first house become as close as our dream house.  My husband invented some stuff and I started to go to Community college.  We thought we would be there longer but Navy wanted my husband to go school faster than the first plan.  We had to move to Connecticut.  I had to leave my babies "garden' that I had been working very hard and about time to enjoy it.  I grew many fruits trees around the house.  My sweet bananas about bared fruit and here we go again  moving.
We had to be at Connecticut for only 6 months.  I decided I would not unpack as much as I supposed to.  I was not even care to decorate the house.  I kept sneaking to read at my rental blog that she wrote about our house; I was crying to know that they loved our house as we do.  Seven mouths on winter time at Connecticut was not please both of us.  My husband used to think to buy another house and station there.  The suffering from cold winter pushed us away.  Navy gave us opportunity to move to Washington.  I had made such a great friends group at Connecticut.  It became really hard to say good bye everyone again.  Yet, school motivation went down when we left San Diego.  I had to get my self together again and set up the new life routine.  We here about a month now. I am still trying to adjust my new life style everyday.  We still have few boxes that are not unpack yet. Few projects around the house have kept me busy ever since.

Blog post #13 4/14 How are the Ed Nar's from published print books different from the blogs?

I think the Ed Nar. published print books is more formal in the language than the blogs.  "As you can imagine, especially in a prison where there was heavy emphasis on rehabilitation, an inmate was smiled upon if he demonstrated an unusually intense interest in books. There was a sizable number of well-read inmates, especially the popular debaters, Some were said by many to be practically walking encyclopedias." according to Malcolm X, this passage shows that Malcolm X writes in formal language and formal format style of writing which is different from blogs.  The Ed Nar. blogs are more likely to be informal writing and made we feel like listen our friend's stories.  The language and grammar are very easy to read.  For example, according to Hudson’s blog “The biggest benefit of traveling alone is never having to wait for anyone. That could give you the opportunity to see more stuff, or it could just give you space in your day to chill out.” this passage shows that Hudson used less formal language in her writing.  However, the audience is still being able to understand her blog.  Blog could refer as the free writing journal and does not need to follow format or form of writing more strict while Ed Nar. published print books could refer as formal essay that need to follow the standard form of writing.

Blog post #12 In small group, 4/14 "Swim Suits"

Swim Suits

A swim suit is an article or articles of clothing that most people wear when the weather becomes warm. When people hear the word "swim suits" most of us think of bikinis, but that's not the case. Swim suits have become very universal and very fashionable. Everyone can find a swimsuit that fits and shows their personality. Swim suits aren't restricted by colors, they come in any color you could imagine and they come in all sorts of styles, from one pieces to speedos. There is uniqueness that can show everyone's personality making them feeling equally comfortable and confident.

With all the unique styles available it is not surprising that swim suites come in many different ways. Even though they all look different they are made out of the same material. They can come in any pattern, color or design imaginable. You can get one in a almost any style you want. However the most common styles are bikini style or one piece. It just depends on how much skin you’re willing to show. All swim suits have the same purpose, which is covering your naughty bits. This is the common goal of all swim suits.  Even though covering is important fashion is becoming just as important.

Swim suits are very fashionable for nowadays. We can say in the fashion world swim suits are a big part in summer season. For women, swim suits come in varieties and women enjoy choosing them. For instance, we hardly see women wear the same style of swim suits on the beach, unless they buy it from the same store. Swim suits can give confidence to whoever is wearing it. Yet, it may motivate someone to be in good shape to wear it too. Swim suits are not just made to be stylish; it can warm our bodies when we are swimming. For example, no one would like to swim naked in the cold water. They would rather wear it even if it is just a bikini. Swim suits could be fashionable in the sports world too. They pay a lot of attention to what design of swim suit is great for sports. It’s not just about looking good it’s about expressing your personality as well.

I feel a swim suit can almost always shape ones first impression of an individual. For instance someone wearing a swimsuit with polka dots or bright colors may have a very open and upbeat personality where as someone wearing a swimsuit in one solid color might be more reserved. I feel the same goes for a 1 piece or a 2 piece suit. A 1 piece might reveal that you prefer to keep to yourself or that you are guarded. A 2 piece in my opinion states that you are more comfortable with yourself and may be more open or comfortable with your surroundings.  Although swim suites do many different things we can all agree on one thing that there is one for everyone.

4/9 blog post #10 you thoughts about the text and how it relates to the first unit....

As a blog, "How I Learned to Love Traveling Solo" is an informative and entertaining article.  As an Education Narrative, this blog is very clear and easy to understand for every audience.  I like some tip that she gives it on her blog which I think it is very good for audience and relate to my experiences.   For Example, “Other solo travellers swear by hostels as a way to meet people, but I’m not sold on the idea. I’ve never stayed in one when traveling alone.”  According to Hudson, I totally agree with her point about travelling alone does not have to be hostels only.  When I traveled alone, I had been stayed at Bed and breakfast places.   I felt more comfortable but still was able to meet local and new friends.  I feel as same as Hudson that hostels could be uncomfortable and unsafe.  I used AirBnB.com and I found it was perfect for me more than I tried to stay at hostels.  Hudson divides her points that are made to easy to understand and read through.  She writes her blog as explore and examine her topic; also, her topic is entertaining and informing the reader.  I have been a solo traveling few times.  When I read Hudson's blog, it is made I want to pack my bag and go on the trip again.

What was your most important educational experience and why? blog post #8 4/9

I told my husband that my dream is graduated college and he decided to send me back to school.  I had to study for GED since I came from Thailand.  After I got my GED, I started to apply to community college at San Diego.  I had to take ESOL classes because my English was very bad.  Back to school this time and ESOL classes have become my most important educational experience.  I have learned so much from my ESOL classes.  To be able to speak and write in English more than first time I moved to USA, it makes me dare to dream big and look forward to keep going to graduate college.  When I was a kid in Thailand, I love school so much and I wanted to be an engineer.  When I moved to USA, I thought I never ever be able to be something more than waitress because I cannot speak or write well in English.  The small steps from ESOL classes are made me feel more confident in myself.  I started to read English books, write a long email, and speak more in public.  Even though, I am still not so good about English grammar, I still want to continuous my school.  I have few Thai girl friends who took ESOL classes with me at San Diego.  Few of them already gave up about school.  They keep saying they are not smart enough and too old for school.  I wish I can persuade them more yet, I feel give up one in while.  ESOL classes had so many foreigners from around the world and most of students were in the old ages like me.  We all felt the same feeling about want to be able to communicate, express, and understand English better in our lives.  Many of ESOL students started to dare to dream like me.  I met one Russian lady studied very hard in her 75 years old.  She shown me the education never late for everyone.  All the feeling and what I have learning and felt throughout the ESOL classes are helping me when I feel down and give up.  I think about few of my ESOL classmates that try very hard for their dream.  Some of them have much harder life than me.  I should not give up my dream that easy.  One day I will be able to write, read, and speak really well in English.  I make my dream come true everyday.

blog post#9 4/9 how are you using your blog and the sample Ed. Nar's. to generate ideas and text for the first formal paper?

The blog is helping me to practice free writing and brain storm my ideas about my first formal paper.  The free writing about the most important educational experience has brighten me some experiences I may forgot about it.  Some of my free writing may be able to use as my supportive example.  When I read my blog later, I find out more new ideas I want to ad to the context.  Some new ideas have grown to be the good context later in my first paper.

The sample Ed. Nar's are helping me see many varieties of writing styles.  I follow their process and lay out their stories.  I found many new vocabularies for me to be able to use on my first paper.  I learned how they bring out their points to the thesis.  I like how they make their supportive example more vivid and clarify the context.  The sample have guided me how to start and put together the ideas into to an essay.  Few of samples are made me feel like listen a good friend story.  I think I will start write like I am going to tell story to some friend and then I will find the way to organize my ideas later to put the context in the right places.

blog post #5 4/7 Malcolm X's and Mike Rose's essays

Malcolm X's essay is different from Mike Rose's essay because Malcolm talks about how he tries to teach himself to read while Rose's talks about the environment around his childhood and his vocational track classmates suffer from poor education.
Personally, I like Malcolm X's essay; it motivate me to study English.  I feel the same as him that I want to be able to read and write in English.  His writing shows techniques and patient of learning which I would like to follow it.  However, Rose's essay gives me totally a different feeling after reading.  I had a very hard time to understand the essay until I need my husband to help me explains word by word and line by line for the whole reading.  The big question in my head after I read Rose's essay is who is his audiences?  This essay seems to be a very great idea for whoever has to deal with the same situation he was.  However, his writing style and his big words have put me into his vocational track class when I read it.  I do not think I would like to write my first essay as Rose's essay style.  I prefer to keep my writing to go smoothly while I write and enjoy writing ;even though, I may do not use many fancy words.  I do not want to get stuck or lost in the big words forest and to make myself and reader to confuse about it.

Real Angry Bird!! blog post #2 4/2

I never play angry bird game; I just hear about it but I think I find the real angry bird at my house.  Since my husband and I move in to our new house, we enjoy and love our new house so much.  The Olympic Mountains view is cheer me up every morning, especially on the sunny blue sky day.  One day after my husband leave to work, I hear the noise from the window.  I look and try to find anyone at the front door.  All I find is the yellow bird hangs out at our patio.  I go back to eat breakfast and keep hearing it every 2 minutes.  I sneak to see what is going on.  It turn out that the yellow bird keeps poking his head to our window.  When he sees me, he just act like he is doing nothing.  Soon I turn around, he turns around and pokes our window again.  He keeps doing that like few hours.  I decide that I would not care since I cannot stop him.  I make a video of it to show my husband later.  The video is about two minutes long.  The angry bird has poked our window like three times.  Later, we try to put the fake owl to scare him but he is not scared of it at all.  My husband tries the rainbow ribbon.  The angry bird still pokes his head as the same, however; it seems less than before.

hello; assignment ; blog post #1

hello classmates,

This is the first post on the blog and my first time to blog, too.  I never use blog before but heard about it for long time.  Finally, this is time for me to start to use it and learn how this blog thing work.  It will an interesting to learn through the blog and this is a new experience to learn through the blog.  I am still struggling with English grammar as it is my second language.  You may find many errors throughout my blog post.  I hope English 101 will guide me to success in academic writing.  I want to be able to write very well and read a lot in English.  This semester actually is my first semester at Olympic college, too.  I am very excited to be here at Washington and Olympic college.  There are so many things I need to get use to around this area and this school.  So far I can say I really like this area and new school.  This English class has a little bit confusion about change Professor during the first week. However, it does not mean it will be affect my learning ( I hope!). Who know after this class, I may become a good blogger
