Ms. Gruwell is a good teacher because she tries her best to understand individual of her students and think critical to find the way to help them. For example, the scene that Ms. Gruwell asks the principle to let students to read Ann Frank's book because she think this book will connect to students' lives. She believes students will be able to read and may open their minds. However, the principle does not think the same thing. The principle thinks students will destroy books and book cannot change them. Furthermore, Ms. Gruwell asks the other teacher to help her to convince the principle. The other teacher shows his racism attitude with students and would not help Ms. Gruwell to talk to the principle. This scene shows clearly why Mr. Gruwell is a good teacher. She believes and sees the potential of great deal in her students while the other teachers already give up on them. She even gos further by trying to find the way to get the book for students. She find the book that is related with students' backgrounds which is made students love to read it. She makes a game in classroom that is made students know how much they have thing in common even though they hate each another. The Journals, that she gives, are encourage students to write and to relief their plains. She tries to understand students' background through their journals.
I loved the scene you picked out! The one where she goes and talks to the principal about the books. How they thought since they were in a lower english that they couldn't rise to the occasion. I think it shows her drive in proving to her colleagues and even her students that they can and will become something more than they were believed to.
ReplyDeleteit is shocking how someone in a position of power can say things like that about students and still have a job. I was in disbelief about how little was thought of the students. I felt so bad for them and was glad they could have someone like mrs. gruwell in their lifes.
